Title
U.S. Census 1960: People of Puerto Rican Parentage in NYC
Subject
A Social Explorer map focusing on U.S. Census data for people in NYC with Puerto Rican parentage.
Description
Based on Social Explorer, this map focuses on five key concentrations of Puerto Ricans in NYC. Notably, the map tracks people with Puerto Rican parentage, a category outlined during the United States 1960 Census, to determine the location and volume of Puerto Ricans per census tract. The map is primarily limited to Manhattan, South Bronx, and North Brooklyn. To clarify, this question may seem puzzling when compared to other maps in this series, namely that people with Puerto Rican parentage should link up with people born in Puerto Rico or with Puerto Rican surnames.
However, the U.S. Census Bureau clarifies this discrepancy with the following key points:
1. A native of the United States who had one parent born in Puerto Rico and the other parent born in a foreign country was not classified as being of Puerto Rican origin. The origin of the father superseded that of the mother.
2. Date for persons who identified themselves as being of Puerto Rican origin are not entirely comparable with data for persons of Puerto Rican birth or parentage because some persons identified themselves as being of Puerto Rican origin although they were not of Puerto Rican birth or parentage. These persons include those who were of third and subsequent generations in the United States.
